Born into a family of water well drillers in a small town in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia,  I developed an interest in art from my Mother who was always interested in arts and crafts.  That led to a BFA  from James Madison University in 1983 with an emphasis on painting & glass.  I was greatly influenced in my painting by Jerry Coulter who worked with joint compound.   I build up surfaces and then refine them by carving, sanding and painting the surfaces with acrylic and oil paints.

However, glass still held a bigger draw for me.  While studying stained glass at Pilchuck Glass School, an unknown guy/passerby told me that I looked like I'd like glass blowing. I watched a demo, and that was it; I spent the next 15 years devoted to glass blowing. I attended Pratt Fine Arts and Penland School of Crafts, before opening a public-access studio in Washington, DC.

During the economic downturn and a move to Seattle, and another move to Putnam Valley NY – I’ve been enjoying working in different mediums – stained glass, painting and lately, woodworking!  I'm concentrating on live edge slab wood stand-alone tables and installed counters/bars.

In all medium, I’m attracted to finding the potential beauty in objects.  The back end of delivery truck is a recent favorite painting,  glass-blown oil-cans are my primary offering in that medium, and stained glass motorcycles reflect both my interest in riding, and in creating non-traditional scenes.  Finally, working with wood, gives me the opportunity to take a slab of wood & make it into beautiful coffee table or bar.  Growing up in a family where function and form were important allowed me to bring it all together in my art.  I hope you enjoy it, too.
